When an individual or a couple first makes the decision to add to their family through adoption, it’s not uncommon for the prospective parents to believe that it will be easier for them to go through an international adoption agency than it would be to adopt in the United States. But the reality is that around 18,000 infants are adopted in the U.S. every year and half of the adoptive families were matched with their birth mother within six months of being approved and in many cases, the birth mother selected the adoptive parents.
Overall, around 75% of all prospective families are matched with a child within one to twelve months and the majority are able to adopt within two years. Factors that can impact this timeline include the availability of birth mothers and the flexibility of the adoptive parents.
Adoptions From The Heart, a private non-profit adoption agency, has been helping build families since 1985. They work hard to provide support to all members of the “adoption triad”, the birth parents, adoptive parents, and child.
For birth mothers, information on all of their options, medical care for mother and child, legal assistance, and supportive counseling are available. For prospective parents, information on financial assistance, support groups, home studies, and other services are available.
