It is all too common for famous personalities to use their popularity as a way to get more money or become more powerful. But among all self-interest-driven celebrities with their tequila brands, there are some real-life Bruce Waynes who see their influence as a way to make the world a little bit better.
From the environment to social work, here are 4 celebrities using their fame to make a difference.
Leonardo DiCaprio
Despite clear evidence of the role of manmade carbon emission in global warming, there are political, social groups in denial of any such thing. Leonardo DiCaprio is perhaps the most notable celebrity making efforts to educate the public about this danger we all face.
The actor founded an organization called “Re: wild” dedicated to protecting and restoring the wild. The organization believes that restoring the wild is the most effective solution to climate change.
DiCaprio also recently made a movie for Netflix called “Don’t Look Up,” which takes a satirical view on the current political state with respect to climate change.
Ed Latimore
Ed Latimore is a former heavyweight boxer with a record of 13-1-1. Being an alcoholism survivor and having been sober for 8 years, Latimore now uses his online presence as a means to help others suffering from alcoholism.
Latimore is also an Amazon best-selling author for his book, “Sober Letters to My Drunken Self,” which talks about his journey through addiction. He has a newsletter called “Stoic Street-Smarts,” where he posts about addition and ways of getting rid of addiction. He also regularly tweets about addiction on his Twitter (@EdLatimore). A recent tweet by him goes, “A high or drunk wears off in hours. The thrill of a new possession wears off in days. But the happiness that comes from relationships built over the years endures until death or dishonor.”
Bill Gates
Alzheimer’s is the sixth largest cause of death in the US. Being one of the age-related diseases, the chance of a person getting the disease increases exponentially with age. There is no known cure for the disease or way to slow its progression. This is partly because not much is understood about it.
The co-founder and former CEO of Microsoft, Bill Gates, is investing in finding a cure for the disease. One of the major risk factors for Alzheimer’s is a family history of the disease—and Gates has several family members who suffered from it.
People with Alzheimer’s gradually start losing their memories and cognitive ability till there’s no remnant left of whom they used to be. Fearing this to be his own fate and that of his children, the multibillionaire is on an active mission to find treatment.
