4 May, 2017 – The Parents in the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) play a significant role in the school district’s culture and current achievements. Educators know that parents have a huge impact in their children’s lives and are in fact their children’s first and most important teachers. Clear View, one of Chula Vista’s elementary schools, has a very active Parent Teacher Association (PTA). The PTA at Clear View Elementary and other CVESD schools have been effective in coordinating with staff and carrying out before, during and after school events. Some of these activities include the Fun Runs, Book Fairs, Harvest Festival, Family Math Night, Family Science Night, Family Reading Night and much more. These events are geared towards educational enrichment through philanthropy, community service, and after-school family nights.
CVESD parent groups are also very prominent in fundraising for schools. Fundraising activities contribute funds towards additional field trips, equipment, or other school needs. While student participation is not required, all students benefit from the resources and experiences afforded by the PTA and other parent organizations.
In an effort to continually improve and raise educational standards, CVESD parents help support the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA). The SPSA is reviewed by parents, community members, teachers, the principal, and other school personnel. The School Site Council “develops, implements, and continually monitors and evaluates the SPSA, a documented plan of action to raise the academic performance of students and improve the school’s education programs.” Members of the SSC review and enhance school programs with a goal to promote effective education and give students the tools to succeed.
CVESD has a successful record of nurturing and supporting parent leaders. The purpose of the annual CVESD Parent Academy is to engage parents in a meaningful professional development seminar, in much the way teachers, principals and school communications professionals experience annually. The Parent Academy, which has been held for the last two years, strives to more directly engage parents in their children’s education and prepare them to provide the support needed in order for students to be more successful in school. The idea for the Parent Academy arose from parent leaders’ experience at the annual California Association for Bilingual Education conferences. There is a parent strand at the conference, one of the largest gatherings of educators on the West Coast. However, the sessions for parents are limited, and often overflowing. District parent leaders asked, “Why can’t we have our own CABE in CVESD?” The administrative team thought, Why not? And soon a committee formed to plan the inaugural event. The Superintendent even has a parent leadership committee, affectionately called his “Parent Cabinet.”
