International Artist Hayley Lam set to release new EP

August 2nd, 2017 – She has loved music since she was a child and began playing the piano ata very young age. Now Hayley Lam, an award-winning international composer from New York, who focuses on classical and contemporary jazz music, is ready to release her brand new EP this fall.

Her interest in music has always been there, so it is no surprise that she earned her Associate Diploma in Recital Piano from the Trinity College of London at the age of eleven and in Recital Violin only a few years later. Apart from that, she holds the Yamaha Teacher‘s Grade in Piano since the age of twelve.

With her exceptional musical abilities, she has also been awarded a prestigious scholarship and completed her Bachelor of Music in just one and a half years.

In 2016, she was selected as the finalist at the Seattle Women‘s Jazz Orchestra Annual Jazz Composition Contest for Women Composer and as the showcase winner at the JEN International Jazz Conference held in New Orleans.

Many more awards have followed, such as the Global Music Awards in the Composer and Jazz Big Band category, one of the best-known awards in the industry. Her works will also be played at the Women of the World equator festival in London later this year. That alone is really impressive and tells of an exciting and unexpected musical story.

Her style has been creatively described as “Stravinsky meets Brookmeyer.” When asked how she would describe her own sound, she used words like “mysterious” and “abstract” which should make us even more curious about her great talent. Her inspiration comes from her daily life, right from the street, from photographs, painting as well as musical colleagues. That she writes all of her songs, herself is only adding to the honesty of her music. Most of her beautiful sounds she creates while experimenting with the instrument, be it the piano or the violin, which she both equally enjoys playing. Currently, she is trying out new sounds using synthesizers, and she describes the process as very inspiring.

Hayley’s taste in music is very varied, as you would expect it from a true music lover. From pop, funk, R&B to progressive rock and of course jazz, you‘ll find almost anything on her list. She counts Frank Zappa, Weather Report and Allan Holdsworth in as her favorite musicians. Not surprisingly, the late Allan Holdsworth‘s keyboardist, Steve Hunt, has been Hayley’s mentor since she came to the States and is also a great inspiration to her.

What did actually get her to play the piano at the incredibly early age of two? It’s a funny little story that shows how captivated she has been by melodic tunes even as a child. Apparently, she watched her brother play the piano and immediately begged her Mum for music lessons before she even learned the Alphabet. Hayley hasn’t let the love for music out of her mind and heart ever since.

Her motto is “If you never try, you’ll never know” and reveals the daring side of her personality. Growing up in a very conservative household with strict rules and clear definitions of “right” and “wrong,” she soon learned that if you don’t go for your dreams, you will never become truly happy. For her it’s not a question of succeeding in the end, it’s about pursuing your own goals. You may make mistakes but “as long as I try, I have no regrets,” Hayley explains. It‘s just a step closer to your goals. An important thing for her is not to be afraid and to step out of her comfort zone occasionally.

Competitions and contests have always been a big part of her life and musical journey since an early age, and for Hayley, the winning continues. Having been in national and international contests alike, she won this year’s international composition contest “Contemporary Piano 2017” in Athens and the Composer Showcase at the International Jazz Conference JEN in New Orleans. But for Hayley, with such outstanding talent, there will surely be even more awards to win and places to go.

Hayley has performed in a series of both local and international events. This year alone she has performed in a dozen of location with fans welcoming her exemplary performance. In the remaining part of the year she is set to perform in various locations, on 19th August 2017, 1.00 am: MostachoXprmnt @ Rockwood Music Hall, New York, and on 10th September 2017, her award winning piano solo work “Distance Structures” will be professionally video recorded by  An Art Artistry @ Athens, Greece.

New music will already be coming our way very soon since Hayley has been working on a new EP album which is a very personal document about her life‘s journey and set to be released now. The single with the refreshing name “Being Alive” is currently available on iTunes, Spotify, and Bandcamp.
