For over a century, Canada has been a focal location point for traditional horror films. Well-known directors such as Toronto native, David Cronenberg, made his debut in Canadian horror films through “Shivers” (1975) and “The Brood” (1979). Though they aren’t home to high box office numbers, they are home to some of the world’s coldest goose bumps and deadliest shrieks that keep eyes awake for nights on end.
Cody Calahan’s newest Canadian horror film, “LET HER OUT” depicts the traumatic future of Helen, a bike courier who awakes in a hospital after an accident that leaves her with strange, episodic blackouts and hallucinations.
But, the doctors can’t save Helen from saving her evil twin free.
In honor of Calahan tackling the frightening topic of “vanishing twins” and the classic Canadian ‘70s genre of “canuxploitation”, DarkCoast has compiled a list of the “10 Scariest Canadian Horror Films”.
1. “Pontypool” (2008)
Bruce McDonald’s famous zombie movie takes place during the freezing Ontario winter.
2. “Scanners” (1981)
David Cronenberg combines terrifying horror with the sci-fi theme of psychic powers.
3. “Let Her Out” (2016)
Cody Calahan tells the story of Helen, who battles her “vanishing twin” after a traumatic bike incident in Toronto.
4. “Ginger Snaps” (2000)
John Fawcett’s film tells the story of two strange, death-obsessed sisters who encounter a werewolf.
5. “Antiviral” (2012)
Son of David Cronenberg, Brandon Cronenberg brings horror through a dystopian future full of deadly viruses.
6. “Black Christmas” (1974)
Bob Clark’s famous slasher film takes place when sorority sisters encounter a serial killer during their Christmas break.
7. “Videodrome” (1983)
Another one of David Cronenberg’s famous Canadian horror films, which takes place in a new reality where the media’s loss of control results in ultimate terror.
8. “The Sublet” (2017)
John Ainslie’s “The Sublet” shows the horrifying new chapter of Joanna and Jeff’s new life when they move into an abandoned sublet apartment.
9. “Pin” (1988)
Sandor Stern’s lead character, Leon, finds comfort when he creates an imaginary friend out of his father’s anatomy doll.
10. “7 Days” (2010)
Directed by Daniel Grou, “7 Days” shows a revengeful doctor, on an expedition to kidnap and kill the man who stole his daughter’s life.
