The University of New England in Tangier and the International Festival of Ibn Battuta: A Partnership in a Bid to Consolidate Peace and Encounters Between Peoples.
As part of the organization of the International Festival of Ibn Battuta’s second edition, taking place in Tangier from 9 to 12 November, under the theme of “Travelers, Ambassadors of Peace”, the Moroccan Association of Ibn Battuta and University of New England have concluded a partnership agreement to make this festival a meeting platform between students and researchers of all stripes.
Mr Anouar Majid, “UNE” initiator, an American university nestled in Tangier for some years now, is a man who has always been committed to creating ties between the United States of America, his adopted country, and Morocco, his home country.
A researcher and renowned academic, Mr. Majid is a tireless worker who writes and edits various works and articles as well as a web magazine, and perseveres, armed with his goodwill and ingenuous smile, to show the best possible image of Morocco and the USA, and never misses an opportunity to build bridges between the two shores of the Atlantic.
Mr. Mohamed Dekkak, honorary president of the association, has always emphasized the importance of partnerships with universities as he believes that the success of a festival lies in the involvement of all the city’s cultural actors and that instilling universal values of peace and tolerance has to mainly engage the youth as they are tomorrow’s elite.
For his part, Mr. Aziz Benami, founder president of the Moroccan Association of Ibn Battuta, stresses that University of New England’s implication will make further advances in the promotion of Tangier specifically, and Morocco in general, through values of peace and tolerance carried by Ibn Battuta, and will allow young American students to discover the intangible Moroccan heritage and return back home as ambassadors of Moroccan culture.
The International Festival of Ibn Battuta will thereby be an opportunity to celebrate the Moroccan-American friendship (the Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship and Peace, sealed in July 18, 1787, is currently the oldest of those concluded by the US and foreign states), among the activities programmed we note: organization of scientific meetings, panel discussions and conferences about the significance of respecting universal values in order to improve international ties, thus making culture an effective instrument in the fight against obscurantism, in addition to the contribution of New England University’s students in the Carnival that will tour the city of Tangier in an atmosphere of joy and liveliness.
