When police conduct criminal investigations using what Leslie refers to as a deductive method of investigation, can result in targeting innocent persons. A deductive method of investigation is where an initial theory is formed based on information provided to the officer by un-vetted witnesses or victimsand in some cases confidential informants, disallowing adverse or exculpatory evidence that might be inconsistent with the initial theory formed by the officer. How law enforcement vet those individuals and the information they provide will depend on the predisposition of the officer. This simply means that the officer firstly scores the witnesses credibility and secondly the information the witness or victim provides. This inductive process forces the officer to accept all information provided by all sources then categorize it by relevance and credibility.
Leslie says that an officer who spends a great deal of time policing higher crime neighborhoods could develop a predisposition and perhaps a tendency to profile specific racial groups connecting them to specific types of crime. Having his type of predisposition can eventually result in instances of police misconduct and ultimately wrongful conviction.
