Los Angeles, CA – May 12, 2018 – TriCoast Worldwide is thrilled to be in partnership with A24 and Writer-Director Adam Rifkin (‘Detroit Rock City’) to represent and sell the cross-generational indie, ‘THE LAST MOVIE STAR’ (a.k.a ‘Dog Years’), to select territories at the upcoming 71st Cannes Film Festival.
‘THE LAST MOVIE STAR’ follows the ‘70s legendary Hollywood icon, Burt Reynolds, playing himself through the character, Vic Edwards, who struggles to accept his fade out from the Hollywood spotlight and old age, reminiscing on his previous life of college football legend turned stunt double turned leading actor. Now an 80-something-year-old man, Vic is unemployed, uses a cane, has no living children and is estranged from his ex-wives, and above all, simply embodies just how lonely old age can be.
With a reversal of fate and convincing from possibly his only friend, Sonny (Chevy Chase), Vic accepts the invitation for the Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Nashville Film Festival, in hopes of having a second chance to revitalize his previous fame and glory as he journeys from L.A. to Nashville, along with his intensely cynical, Goth-styled, personal assistant or the weekend, Lil (‘Modern Family’ Ariel Winter). Expecting the normal glitz and glamour of award of the film festival life, Vic’s expectations fall further from short when he discovers that the film festival is a low budget operation that takes place in a bar’s back room, run by fan boys, Doug McDougal (Clark Duke) and Shane McAvoy (Ellar Coltrane).
Little does he realize that the best is yet to come.
At the bar, Vic can no longer contain his disappointment and rage as he throws a public, drunken bar fight, demanding to go home. Ordering Lil to take him to the airport, the two set out on a three-hour drive to Knoxville, where Vic claims he has some “long-unfinished business”. Despite their constant bickering and overall disastrous adventure, ‘THE LAST MOVIE STAR’ becomes a poignant film with raw sincerity, sharing the universal story about growing old, the rise and fall of Hollywood fame, that it is never too late for companionship.

‘THE LAST MOVIE STAR’ participated in several film festivals, beginning with the Tribeca Film Festival (April 2017), Nantucket Film Festival (June 2017), San Diego International Film Festival (October 2017), Key West Film Festival (November 2017) and Palm Springs International Film Festival (January 2018). ‘THE LAST MOVIE STAR’ has received a whirlwind of press and accomplishments, including two wins from the San Diego International Film Festival, Chairman’s Award and Festival Award. Distributors, A24, then released the film in March 2018 in the USA with international rights to TriCoast Worldwide and their CEOs, Strathford Hamilton and Marcy Levitas Hamilton.
As a lifelong Reynolds fan, Rifkin wrote ‘THE LAST MOVIE STAR’ specifically for his childhood hero, as a tribute and of honoring the actor’s past and future. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rifkin told Reynolds manager, “Please tell Burt if Burt doesn’t want to play this film, I’m not making it.” Rifkin’s 10-year childhood hero became the biggest name on Hollywood’s screens during the 1970s, emerged with into Hollywood with A list films including, ‘Deliverance’ (1972), ‘White Lightning’ (1973) and ‘The Longest Yard’ (1974). Soon after, Reynolds gained worldwide recognition and fame, with role in ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ (1997), which out-grossed two longtime celebrated films, ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’. Within the same year, Reynolds was given Golden Globe-winning, Oscar-nominated supporting role in ‘Boogie Nights’ as Jack Turner.
After Reynolds revelation in ‘Boogie Nights’ in 1997, “We’d all forgotten that Burt Reynolds could really act,” continued Rolling Stone’s Epstein, adding, “Now, thanks to Rifkin, Reynolds is back with what’s arguably his best performance since ‘Boogie Nights’.

In Rolling Stone’s last words of praise for Reynolds, Epstein concluded, “Go back and watch him in ‘Deliverance’, ‘The Longest Yard’, ‘Hustle’, ‘Sharky’s Machine’ or the original ‘Smokey and the Bandit’, and treat yourself to the deceptively simple pleasures of a classic Burt Reynolds performance.”
