The Discovery House Hosts Recovery Photo Project to Raise Awareness of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders

Mental and substance use disorders and the societal benefits of recovery for our country must be addressed immediately. To promote the widespread observance, The Discovery House is leading a recovery photo project called #RecoveryLooksLike to support people in recovery and draw attention to critical prevention, treatment, and recovery support services. Written stories, poems, and songs may also be submitted.

Anyone who would like to participate can share their photos and stories at recoverylookslike.com. Individuals can also join by posting pictures and stories on social media with #recoverylookslike. Participants will also be entered to win prizes that will help them celebrate and support their recovery journey.

In 2016, an estimated 44.7 million adults aged 18 or older (18.3 percent) had any mental illness in the past year according to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an annual survey released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

“In honor of National Recovery Month, the “Recovery Looks Like” project aims to share stories of inspiration and hope to build a recovery community for those near and far,” said Deborah Kavis, the social media manager who is heading the project. “We want this project to serve as a reminder that addiction does not discriminate and that no one is alone in his or her fight against the disease.”

This photo contest will feature people in recovery and how sharing their stories is critical in navigating communities out of the darkness that the disease of addiction brings in families and communities. It will be a part of Recovery Month, a national observance sponsored by SAMHSA, within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The observance raises awareness of mental health and substance use disorders, celebrates individuals in long-term recovery, and acknowledges the work of prevention, treatment, and recovery support services.
