You never know who will be reading your resume, so you want balance between technical terms and simple language.”
Millennials should also tailor their resumes based on the job description. Rather than making it very broad and all-encompassing, look at what the employer is searching for in a candidate, notes Clark. Zero in on the skills and abilities highlighted in the job opening and ensure that the resume touches on these points as applicable.
Lacking relevant experience or skills? Clark encourages job seekers to consider volunteer opportunities or professional development courses to bridge these gaps. Volunteer experience may be unpaid, but it can still be highly valuable and provide essential skills and training. It can be a way to network and explore job opportunities too. In addition, there are many online programs that offer free or low-cost courses for job seekers to boost their training. Employers like to see that candidates are invested in their careers and proactive about advancing their knowledge and skills.
“Talent comes in all forms,” says Clark. “Make yourself stand out by highlighting what you have to offer and showing employers how you can benefit their organization. Maybe you don’t have as much experience as someone else, but if they can see your potential and determination, that can go a long way. Craft a solid resume that conveys your strengths, abilities, and accomplishments and makes an employer want to bring you in to learn more.”
