Palmdale School District Teachers Set Up for Success with Professional Development Offered in Education, Behavioral Support, and Technology

At Palmdale School District, helping students to become their best self by cultivating a love for learning is the number one goal. Palmdale administrators take this goal seriously and understand the best way for students to learn is to have happy teachers and staff who are well trained. Palmdale School District (PSD) offers a wide range of professional development to their teachers and staff to ensure every adult Palmdale students are taught by have a well-rounded knowledge of technology, education, and behavioral support.

Palmdale School District ensures its teachers are using their classroom technology to the fullest and offer coaches that can help teachers understand all the amazing things they can do with technology in the classroom. Palmdale also participates in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) program, which aims to improve science education through state-based standards and three dimensional learning that stimulate students’ interests in science and prepares them for college, careers, and citizenship.

PSD also focuses professional development in math, bringing in Dr. Michele Douglass to train teachers on new math concepts, using technology to teach math, lesson planning, and analyzing data . Palmdale is proud to offer its teachers this training, as Dr. Douglass is an experienced Academic Coach skilled in staff development with a Doctorate focused in Mathematics Teacher Leadership.

Professional development in social and behavioral areas is another way Palmdale School District ensures that the whole child is nurtured during their educational experience. Positive Behavior Intervention & Support(PBIS) is offered to teachers and staff, which aims to improve social, emotional and academic outcomes for all students, including those with disabilities and from underrepresented groups. Other trainings include Capturing Kids Hearts, where the belief is “If you have a child’s heart, you have their mind,” and Unconscious Bias Training which helps teachers understand their own unconscious biases and teach beyond those biases to the mind of each individual student. 

Coaching is also offered to help beginning teachers transition into their new role and for ELL (English Language Learners) teachers. All of the training offered to teachers and staff at Palmdale School District is focused on giving students the best experience everywhere they go on a Palmdale campus. Trainings are focused on building relationships, not just academics, so students feel that they can connect with their teachers to create the best environment possible for learning.

Palmdale School District dates back to the late 1800s when German and Swiss families emigrated to the area and called it “Palmenthal” after mistaking the local Joshua trees in the area for palm trees. Now serving the majority of the city of Palmdale, California, the district has approximately 19,000 students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.
