These days, Instagram celebrities are seen as the pinnacle of popularity. Instagram influencers have armies of raving fans that total into the millions. They are beautiful, successful and relatable — and they are paid extremely well to promote brands and products.
They also have one other thing in common: famed photographer Robert Voltaire.
Best-known for his appearances on “America’s Next Top Model” and “Model Employee” on VH1, Voltaire rose to fame after shooting Brooke Shields for Calvin Klein. His work has appeared in fashion magazines including Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, Esquire, and Playboy.
Now, he’s pulling back the curtain to show budding celebrity photographers how he does it with a new book, “Photography Marketing Masterclass.” In it, Voltaire gives away some of the secrets that have made him a world-class lensman.
There’s more to creating a great image than technical proficiency, Voltaire said.
“Photography is about storytelling and fantasy.” When I am shooting I think cinematically. Where is she going? Where is she from? Sometimes it’s the details… Where are her hands? What is her mouth saying?” he said.
And capturing those details makes the difference. How much? Three years ago, model Rachel Cook had about 15,000 Instagram followers. Then she worked with Robert Voltaire for a Treats Magazine cover shoot.
Not long after, Cook began to gain an incredible 100,000 Instagram followers a month. Now, after appearing in hundreds of Voltaire’s images (which can be found all over the internet) Cook has over two million followers.
Robert Voltaire may have the world’s best job, but he’s not keeping it all to himself, and “Photography Marketing Masterclass” just may help an up-and-coming photographer make it big.
