Prepare Your Fence for Hurricane Season
It’s that time again! Hurricane Season is June 1st through November 30th, and that is a stressful time for home owners here in Florida.
As Hurricane Season 2019 approaches, we can’t help but think back to the past couple years and what devastating effect they had on certain areas of the state of Florida. You want to stay ahead of the curve, you can prepare now while you still have plenty of time.
Then you won’t have to fight your way through the crowds for lumber and batteries! Another thing people leave until the last minute is trying to find a gate or fence company to prepare their property for the upcoming storm.
Let’s talk about your fence. Whether you have standard wooden fence, vinyl privacy fence or even a shadow box fence, there are certain precautions you can take to give your fence its best chance at survival.
How old is your fence?
Is your fence getting up there in age? If so, it could be rotting on the inside, ready to snap when it is hit by a big gust of wind. Anything can become a missile in a hurricane, and planks of wood are no exception. You don’t want them beating against the side of your house or crashing through your windows.
Keep an eye out on how much it wobbles in the wind or when you give it a strong shake. If it is wobbly, it may be time to replace it before it becomes a wind sail.
What is your fence up against?
Other objects can hit your fence and create damage. Trampolines are notorious for taking out sections of fence like the Kool-Aid Man busting through a wall.
Furniture, gnomes, trees and other easily fling-able objects should be brought in or secured. Poles and posts are like knives ready to cut butter when the right wind catch them. Be ready! It also doesn’t hurt to trim trees or tie back limbs in preparation for the wind storm that is about to unfold.
