Captions Can Boost Sales & Increase Audience Reach, Says Accessibility Consultant Svetlana Kouznetsova

May 17, 2019 – Content creators or media producers have been neglecting a sizeable portion of their audience until now, all due to the lack of a simple element – good quality captions. The ability to read what is being said can markedly increase viewership and sales, according to a recent TEDx talk given by Svetlana Kouznetsova, NYC-based user experience, and accessibility consultant.

There are millions of people around the world with varying degrees of deafness. This huge viewership relies on captions while watching videos, attending classes or events, or listening to podcasts. Captions are reported to increase viewership by 40%. They are important on Facebook too, where 85% of videos are played on mute.

These and more revealing facts are shared by Svetlana Kouznetsova in her TEDx talk: How captions increase ROI and audience for media creators.

“Advances in technology on platforms like YouTube has made it all the easier to add captions. An experienced specialist can quickly create captions that are easy to read and follow while adhering to quality standards and guidelines,” says Svetlana.

Svetlana is also an accessibility consultant and caters to the requirements of podcasts, webinars, classes, meetings, and live events. Among other things, she shares the latest information on what are the best practices to increase accessibility, which communication provider to choose, and how to improve the quality of communication for digital products and services with the use of captions, transcripts, real-time captions, sign language interpretation, cued speech transliteration, oral interpreting and notetaking.

These and other pioneering insights are now available in print in the form of ‘Sound is Not Enough: Captioning as Universal Design’. The second edition of the book authored by Svetlana is now underway. Among other things, readers will find here ways to tap into the huge and diverse segment of deaf and hard-of-hearing as well as those who view muted content.

Svetlana is available for consulting services, workshops, training sessions, caption and transcript assignments, and event presentations.
