Natural Insect Repellent Beat DEET Based Product in Black Flies Study at the University Of Georgia

Most insect repellents use DEET, a synthetic chemical, as an active ingredient. Research conducted by the University of Georgia proves that Natural Insect repellent is more effective in repelling black flies than DEET based products

During the research, Medella Laboratories’ natural product and a DEET based product were tested for repellency against the biting effects of Blackflies. The fly was selected because of its significance as a pest against man and animal, around the world.

After application of both products, the Medella Naturals’ formulation repelled greater than 90% of the bites through 5.5 hours post-application compared to the DEET formulation that repelled at 40% beyond a 90 minute period.

This shows the superiority of the Medella Naturals repellent product over products with DEET in them, which is very rare. The natural formulation was highly effective repelling adult black flies, commonly referred to as “gnats” in North America, in the water-jacketed membrane feeder assay.

DEET or diethyltoluamide, is the most common active ingredient in insect repellents manufacturing. For many years, it has provided protection against most of the insects with characteristics of biting. DEET is a synthetic chemical with several publications pointing to certain health issues that might arise due to constant use.
