Atlanta – Artportunity Knocks has shiftedits focus during the Summer months in response to COVID-19 Summer Camp closures to a fun new program called Steam N’Meals.
S.T.E.A.M n’Meals is a food and learning initiative which combines meal packages and a project or toy focused on learning Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) concepts. Inspiredby the “McDonalds Happy Meal,” Artportunity Knocks wanted to bring creativity, fun and food to the homes of thousands of students in the Metro Atlanta area. “My son is very social, creative and always hungry! I would take him to McDonalds during the pandemic and that toy made him so happy. That’s whenit dawned on me that I am in the position to bring happiness to thousands of other kids who are just like him through our state-approved food distribution program and the STEAM kits which was recently funded by United Way of Metro Atlanta and American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation. Steam N’Meals was born because my son represents the thousands of kids in Metro Atlanta who missed out on Summer camp and those delicious lunches that Summer camp offers,” says Ty Woods, Executive Director of Artportunity Knocks.
Since June 1, 2020, Artportunity Knocks has provided more than 8,000 meals to families affected by COVID-19. Artportunity Knocks has already expanded the program through partnerships with Project Future (Cobb), Empowerment Worship Center (Cobb), Fulton Juvenile system, Kingdom of God Int’l (College Park), Atlanta Heights Charter School, First Baptist Church (Woodstock), and looking to partner with other organizations throughout Fulton, Cobb and Cherokee counties to serve even more. “We want to continue serving as many students as possible with the goal of feeding 5,000 students each week,” says Woods.
