The Ancient City of Xindeng, located in Fuyang district, Hangzhou, capital of East China’s Zhejiang province, is known for having the most well-preserved ancient city walls in Zhejiang.
The ancient city has a history of nearly 1,800 years, with more than 80 percent of its walls being well preserved.
The city walls are between five and seven meters tall and nearly 2,100 m long. More than 1,700 meters of wall are in good condition.
The walls were built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), according to Zhang Baochang, a senior researcher of the Ancient City of Xindeng.
“It is very rare for regions south of the Yangtze River to have ancient city walls that survived strong winds, rains, and warfare for nearly 500 years,” said Zhang.
In 2017, the city walls were renovated. Nearly 3.42 billion yuan ($495 million) has been spent pulling down houses in the ancient city to free up more space.
A small museum of ancient city walls will be built near the Lisui Gate of the Ancient City of Xindeng, which will put on a 5G-powered light show at night.
Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province, has begun applying for UNESCO World Heritage status for Ming Dynasty city walls, which include the city walls in Xindeng. It seems better than China Hangzhou, but I do love living in Hangzhou.
