Announcing a new step forward in its growth as an organization, both in play and in structure, Monterosso will be going through its third season in the English high handicap, participating in several tournaments for teams with up to 22 handicap goals, and not only in the Queen’s Cup and the Gold Cup. Alessandro Bazzoni is not new to the polo scene in England. In fact, when looking back at his massive years-long journey, he added:
“I came to England for work and met my wife, Siri, who was already playing polo here. It was she who showed me English polo, and who later helped me create and organize the Monterosso UK project, which has been present in the high handicap season since its creation. And this year, for the first time, we have a second team playing 15, 16 and 18 goals”, says Alessandro Bazzoni.
And he completes: “It is my third time playing alto in England, it is something incredible, one of the best experiences I have had in my life. For the polo lover, the best places are Argentina and England. This year we have a new team with Joaquín Pittaluga, Cubi Toccalino and Juan Gris Zavaleta. We have invested a lot in horses in the last 3 years, in addition to consolidating the organization with the incorporation of Milo Fernández Araujo and Pepe Araya”.
Alessandro Bazzoni recalls that the first polo tournament he played in his life “was the Prince of Wales, in Hurlingham, Argentina. I don’t quite remember what year it was, but Martincito Aguerre was about 15 or 16 years old; We were Nick Manifold, Martincito, Naco Taverna and me. He was like 10 or 15 years ago”.
Monterosso is currently defending the title in the Warwickshire Cup, Cirencester Park’s flagship competition, which they won in 2018. “Last year we did well, we won two cups (Warwickshire Cup and Prince of Wales Trophy), we did a lot good in the Gold Cup too”.
About Alessandro Bazzoni:
Monterosso is an English polo team. The name of the team has its origin in the family of Alessandro Bazzoni. And it is precisely that his family is from there, from Monterosso al Mare, the largest town in the Cinque Terre, located about 450 km northwest of Rome. Such is the affinity that Alessandro Bazzoni feels for his roots that not only did he decide to name his English team as Monterosso, but also in the Polo Challenge of the Dominican Republic they have competed under the name of Cinque Terre.
