Palo Alto – The Transpersonal Psychology Day on February 27, will be an opportunity for Transpersonal Psychology practitioners, researchers, students, and supporters to meet and share. It is a call for all psychologists and life-long experimenters to convene and discuss the transpersonal paths, and how the work of William James, Carl Gustav Jung, Roberto Assagioli, Abraham Maslow, Ken Wilber, Stanislav Grof, Steve Taylor, etc. applies to their lives.
Transpersonal Psychology studies wider states of consciousness. That transcend what are considered our “ordinary”, personal ways of being. While events like peak experiences, are now appreciated as integral parts of our lives, that was not the case in the near past, when transcendental experiences were labelled as dysfunctional. Transpersonal Psychology professionals and supporters are active in a wide range of experiential activities and disciplines: inner child healing, holotropic breathwork, body awareness and movement, vipassana, guided visualization, Kabbalah, Abulafia’s meditation, yoga therapy, journal writing, regression therapy, dream work, symbolic artwork, Jungian alchemy, etc.
February 27 (1888) was the birthday of Roberto Assagioli, the Italian psychiatrist who pioneered humanistic and transpersonal psychology, founding Psychosynthesis. According to Assagioli “Psychosynthesis is interested in the whole building. We try to build an elevator which will allow a person access to every level of his personality. After all, a building with only a basement is very limited. We want to open up the terrace where you can sun-bathe or look at the stars. Our concern is the synthesis of all areas of the personality. That means psychosynthesis is holistic, global and inclusive. It is not against psychoanalysis or even behavior modification but it insists that the needs for meaning, for higher values, for a spiritual life, are as real as biological or social needs. We deny that there are any isolated human problems”.
Quoting the Segen’s Medical Dictionary (2011): “Psychosynthesis is a four-step process that requires thorough self-knowledge, self-control, realisation of one’s inner self (resulting in the creation of a “unifying centre”) and psychosynthesis, the final stage, in which the personality is reconstructed around the unifying centre. Assagioli viewed a person as having a psychic structure with three layers: an unconscious and a conscious self, which is connected directly with a transpersonal self that interacts with others, known as the collective unconscious”.
As a decentralized event, each person and organization active in the field of Transpersonal Psychology, is welcome to take part in this event, offline and online. https://transpersonalpsychologyday.exstatica.org/ and https://twitter.com/exstaticaorg will provide updates as we approach February 27, but opportunities will also be freely disseminated by participants. The event will be available in Spanish language as well, as “Día de la Psicología Transpersonal.”
