Swedish-American crossover artist, singer-songwriter, opera singer, bandleader, and composer IVA has announced her residency with Brooklyn Music School. As part of the residency, IVA will give a reading of her opera libretto and lead workshops in singing, songwriting, and performing with her band. IVA’s residency with Brooklyn Music School provides an opportunity to make music engagement and training available for everyone, no matter their background or access to resources.

Emily Tepe, known professionally as IVA, was born into a musical family. She has trained at Princeton University, the Juilliard School, and the Manhattan School of Music before moving to Stockholm, Sweden on a Fulbright scholarship. In addition to her career as a pop singer-songwriter, she has performed on television and in off-Broadway shows.

“She can sing so high that her voice actually goes outside the range of human hearing,” said Conan O’Brien following her appearance on Late Night.

IVA made history when she became the youngest person to receive the Vasa Order’s Swedish-American of the Year award for her unparalleled career and involvement in American-Swedish cultural relations.

As part of the residency, Brooklyn Music School is offering a singer-songwriter workshop with crossover artist IVA. Students will learn to record their songs on their equipment in the new BMS computer lab and will perform together at the end of the semester.

“The skills I learned were extremely beneficial to developing my songwriting, as well as who I am as an artist. I took those skills and earned admission acceptance to both Berklee College of Music and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music,” said prior student Michelle Ley.

Brooklyn Music School (BMS) is a community school for the performing arts, founded in 1909 as the Brooklyn Music School Settlement. As a part of the Downtown Brooklyn Cultural District, BMS is a long-standing member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts. Today, BMS is committed to serving the community by providing high-quality performing arts instruction regardless of income, age, previous experience, or professional aspirations.
