In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month (April), Bethany Walker launches a Kickstarter campaign for her children’s picture book, titled “Lena & The Dragon.” The picture book explores different themes revolving around childhood trauma and recovery. To place this book in the hands of many children dealing with trauma and anxiety, members of the public are encouraged to back the project in any way they can. As an added advantage, if 10 books are purchased, 1 book will be donated to the children’s advocacy center, foster homes, and organizations specializing in helping children who have experienced trauma.
As a licensed social worker, trauma specialist, and KidLit author, Bethany drew inspiration from her personal unaddressed childhood trauma and the children she works with suffering from childhood trauma and abuse. In most cases, children dealing with trauma find it challenging to talk about it, and most parents do not know how to find their way around handling the situation. It is apparent that in a case like this, urgent help is needed to take the children out of the traumatic situation. This is where Lena & Dragon comes in handy to empower and encourage these children in a creative, fun, and playful way to be expressive about their experiences as well as their feelings.
“The book provides strategies for managing anxiety, triggers, and other side effects of trauma. Lena & Dragon is an excellent tool for parents of young children and educators, as well as psychotherapists and other mental health practitioners. Because childhood trauma is real, this book will help children to be more expressive about their fears, anger, and anxiety. When the campaign is successful, 50 of the first run print books will be signed and donated to local Longview area organizations, in addition to any donated by supporters,” said the company’s spokesperson.
