What is the risk of side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine if someone has Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in the country and one of the most difficult to diagnose. Experts in the medical and scientific community, as well as key legislators, have deemed Lyme disease an epidemic … a national public health crisis … and a growing threat.

If you do have a history of Lyme disease and you are sceptical about getting the COVID-19 vaccine, then that is no surprise because firstly, none of us was prepared for this pandemic to hit the planet and bring about drastic changes to our lifestyle and secondly, being affected by Lyme disease is a mystery and dealing with its symptoms can be a struggle. No matter how badly we all wanted a cure for COVID-19, as soon as we had the vaccine introduced, we immediately questioned its effectiveness and were not sure about getting it due to the side effects it may have.

People with a history of Lyme disease are concerned that their symptom burden might increase with the COVID-19 vaccine. However, according to a blog by Dr. Daniel Cameron people with a history of Lyme disease who got vaccinated for COVID-19 did not worsen the symptom burden for individuals with a history of Lyme disease.

A 28-year-old woman with a history of Lyme disease described her experience with the COVID-19 vaccine. She was affected by this disease when she was 16 years old. She got a shot of the Pfizer vaccine at the age of 28 and experienced common side-effects like headache, fatigue, and pain in arm for less than 48 hours.

Another individual with a history of Lyme disease experienced extreme side effects after the COVID-19 vaccine and exclaimed.

“After about a week, I began to experience extreme fatigue, difficulties with my lungs (finding it hard to breathe), and heart palpitations. I also struggled to walk any distance as my body would become tired very quickly (these were symptoms I had not experienced for about four years since the start of my Lyme disease treatment).”

Only 4% of individuals with a history of Lyme disease reported severe side effects like vomiting, dizziness, headache, palpitations, etc that lasted for 72 hours. While we cannot know why this requires further investigation.
