Sydney, Australia – 21st June, 2022 – Retirement parties are becoming a regular feature of everyone’s lives. It is hardly surprising as more and more people worldwide are retiring. This has led to a growing need for retirement gifts. Data from Google shows that the number of searches for retirement gifts has increased over the last five years. Magdalena Kusyk, owner and founder of 4Retirees, agrees with this data, saying, “We have over 11,000 members worldwide, which helps us to have a unique insight into issues and trends affecting retirees. More and more people are looking for retirement gifts for friends and co-workers. I have observed this over some time, so I decided to add a shop for retirement gifts to our community. It has proven to be a popular addition.”
Data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis shows that women are three times more likely to retire than men in the USA. A number of different factors are causing this surge in retirees, but it seems to be a continuing trend. One surprising influence has been the pandemic. The unwelcome realisation of how fragile and short life can be caused many to prioritise spending time with loved ones, including family and friends. This has led to many choosing to retire earlier than initially planned, especially women.
Choosing a suitable gift for a female friend who is about to retire is trickier than you might think. It is a popular idea that women are easier to buy presents for than males. However, a study published in ‘Psychology Today’ conducted by Jeff Galak, an associate professor of marketing at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University, showed that the reverse was true. The stereotypical view is that women will always be happy to receive jewellery, flowers or chocolate. The survey showed that a thoughtful gift for a woman requires a lot of careful thought.
Retirement gifts tend to fall into two categories: things that remind them of good memories or something to celebrate a new phase of life. In the first group are gifts such as photo albums or a plaque engraved with their notable achievements and number of years working. The second type of gift would include equipment for a new hobby and items to enhance leisure time. The most popular gift for women on 4Retirees is retirement gift bag ,” Ms Kusyk says. “Also attracting a lot of interest are fun t-shirts and online games”
Personalising a gift can make it more unique and appreciated by the recipient. Whether it is a pair of socks, a mug, a keychain or a bag, it is easy nowadays to add your friend’s name. Including a humorous saying on your gift related to retirement is also a popular trend. “Retirement is no longer viewed as the end of a person’s active and productive life,” Ms Kusyk tells us. “Retirees are of all ages and view retirement as the start of a new chapter, not the conclusion. Many have hobbies and projects they have been planning for and are looking forward to having time to pursue. Retirement is something they are actively looking forward to and enjoying when they achieve it.” The 2021 Transamerica Retirement Survey of Workers agrees with Ms Kusyk. Eighty-six per cent of workers cite positive word associations with “retirement”, the most popular words being “freedom”, “enjoyment”, and “stress-free”.
Thinking about how the retiree you are buying a gift for is planning on spending their retirement can help when choosing an appropriate gift. The 2021 Transamerica Retirement Survey of Workers showed that 65% of workers are looking forward to travelling, 59% are going to enjoy spending more time with family and friends, and 51% anticipate pursuing hobbies. A further 21% can’t wait to take care of their grandchildren. This is especially true for women. Whether it is sharing memories with older relatives or babysitting younger ones, having the time and energy to spend quality time with their loved ones is a highlight of retirement for many.
As the Baby Boomer generation ages, the number of retirees will keep increasing, and so will the need for appropriate retirement gifts.
