Walk-a-Thon is an international walking event to honor National Women’s Health and Fitness Day on September 28, 2022, and bring awareness to the many benefits of walking. It is a fundraiser for the Women’s Wellness Lounge’s Pinky Promise program, which supports women receiving Breast Cancer treatments. The event aims to make people aware of the numerous advantages of walking.
The Women’s Wellness Lounge was founded in 2011 by a nurse who aims to alter women of color’s perception as “sick care” recipients. Delayna Watkins (Executive Director of Women’s Wellness Lounge) launched a diligent campaign to inform, advocate for, and offer health services to women after realizing there was a massive gap between health care and healthy living. The group received official nonprofit status when it turned ten years old in 2021. Over 10,000 girls and women of color nationally have benefited from the organization’s work in the last ten years in terms of improved health outcomes.
“I had no idea that women in large numbers would become so interested in meeting up and going for a walk. Many women would come early to unwind before starting their walking regime,” said Delayna Watkins, Executive Director. “Lacing up our sneakers helped women with emotional healing and physical health. We were able to “tie” it all together in a fun and effective way.” she added.
The different kinds of programs undertaken by The Women’s Wellness Lounge include the She Is Well Program, Glow Girl Program, Heart Health Matters Program, Sugarless Living Diabetes Program, End The Pretend, and Pinky Promise Breast Cancer Program.
To participate in the Walk-a-Thon, women can register as a team, organization, or individual. On the event day, they can walk in their neighborhood, on a local trail, or meet the Women’s Wellness Lounge’s team at BWI Observatory Park.
