Adventure Sports Journal is California’s original outdoor magazine. Since 2001, the family owned publication has been inspiring adventure, event participation, exploration and environmental stewardship in California, Nevada, and beyond. ASJ is a free resource for the community and is in direct competition with corporate media and online platforms.
Like many businesses, the pandemic revealed the vulnerability of the ASJ business model that relied solely on advertising support to make their publication possible. As businesses shut their doors due to COVID, their customers had to pull their ads from ASJ. The publishers thought it would be an end to their publication. Luckily, some readers helped them set up a membership program that now helps the publication meet some of their expenses. The husband and wife team see growing the membership program as a vital part of their business moving forward.
“The pandemic showed us that relying on just one source of revenue isn’t sustainable,” says publisher Cathy Claesson. “We are so grateful to those readers who suggested we start a membership program. Without their help and the support of our members, there is no way we would have made it through the last couple of years.”
Like everything else, the cost of doing business is going up so having financial support from Adventure Sports Journal readers is a necessity moving forward. With this in mind, the publishers are announcing their Winter Membership Drive.
It’s an invitation to all those who love to read ASJ, or would like to read it in the future. Members will be entered to win a GIRO Thor or Tenaya Spherical Helmet, together with a pair of the all-new Giro x Fender Axis Colab Goggles. The drawing will be on January 9, 2023.
Adventure Sports Journal plans to implement membership giveaways throughout the year and is developing a corporate membership plan for businesses who believe in the value of independent media.
The reader membership plans are as low as $5 per month and include a subscription to the publication and entry into future giveaways. ASJ also welcomes one-time donations.

About Adventure Sports Journal:
Since 2001, the husband and wife team have printed and distributed millions of copies of Adventure Sports Journal to those who are interested — no matter what their economic status is. Each issue is distributed at more than 1,000 locations across California and parts of Nevada. Though the cost of a subscription is affordable for most of their readers, the publishers want to keep ASJ available as a free resource to the general public. The magazine offers information and inspiration related to human powered sports, adventure travel and environmental stewardship.
