Indie Night, the world’s only weekly film festival, hit its 10th anniversary this fall, and organizer Dave Brown already has big plans for what’s coming next.
Not only will the popular weekly film festival in Hollywood continue each Saturday at the TCL Chinese Theatre, but Brown is planning to put together mini-Indie Night festivals around the country which will feed into the main event.
He explained his vision during a recent appearance on “Good Day Atlanta,” where he also shared the origins of Indie Night.
After graduating from Morehouse College in Atlanta, he was encouraged to seek fame and fortune on the West Coast. His friend Morris Chestnut was already there, and he soon made friends with others in the business, including actor Jamie Foxx.
Brown quickly realized that there needs to be more networking opportunities and ways for newcomers to make solid professional and personal contacts.
He liked the idea of film festivals, but most were annual. Instead, he decided to create something weekly, even if people told him that there wouldn’t be enough films to watch.
But they were wrong, there has always been plenty of submissions.
Now each week, five new productions are screened, which could include short films, trailers, episodes of web series, commercials and more.
The diverse audience includes everyone from Oscar winners and top producers and directors to film students. There are often composers, actors, and other members of the industry who attend.
Indie Night continued during the pandemic as well: Brown put each week’s submissions online so people could watch them on their own or share with friends.
The festival is now meeting in person again, but the online option is still available for those who can’t make it on a particular week or if someone wants to watch a favorite submission again.
Brown and his team choose the five submissions each week.
During his “Good Day Atlanta” interview, he said the mini-festivals will be held in cities around the country, such as Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Las Vegas and Miami.
The format will be similar to “American Idol,” where contestants share their talents in a community near them, and then some of their films will be chosen to be screened at the weekly event in Hollywood.
This way, more people will be able to get their projects seen, and possibly get connected to others in the industry.
