Academics for Development, Youth for the Future – China Studies Program Doctoral Students Workshops Held

On December 18, 2022, the last event of the China Studies Program Doctoral Students Workshops was held through online and offline combination. Themed by “The Construction and Development of a Diversified Training System for International Chinese Language Education in the New Era”, this workshop is sponsored by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) and organized by Sichuan University, which is one of events of the International Chinese Language Education Expo 2022. Song Yongbo, Deputy Director-General of CLEC, and Yao Leye, Vice President of Sichuan University, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Guests from Egypt, Korea, the United States, Cameroon, and other countries congratulated the workshop via video. More than 70 representatives of doctoral students from 23 countries, and above 100 international Chinese language education teachers, master degree and doctoral students, attended the event online.

Song Yongbo affirmed the important role of China Studies Program in promoting the high-quality development of international Chinese language education, and hoped that China Studies Program would always maintain high standards of professionals selection and training, and continue to take advantage of features like multi-tutor system, “mentoring” teaching, and interdisciplinary cooperation, and provide high-quality academic resources, networks and platforms for young sinologists through its special programs, so that it can better play its leading role and make use of its brand benefits in the cultivation of high-level international professionals. He also noted that the high-quality development of international Chinese language education cannot be achieved without the joint participation and unremitting efforts of young people from all countries. What the youth think and concern reveals their needs, and what achievements the youth gain proves their quality. He expected that the in-depth exchange of young doctoral students at home and abroad can promote the diversified development and common prosperity of international Chinese language education research in various countries.

Yao Leye said that Sichuan University attaches great importance to international Chinese language education professionals training and has organized various educational activities according to local conditions, which helps form a unique concept and system of international Chinese language education distinguishing by Sichuan characteristics and Sichuan University style. He hoped that the participants could make full use of the China Studies Program and other platforms set up by the CLEC to share ideas and tell China stories thoroughly and clearly in the new era.

Guests congratulated on the opening of the workshop, and they were Esraa Abdelsayed Hassan Mohamed, Director of Confucius Institute, Ain Shams University, Egypt; Seowon Kam, Director of Confucius Institute, Woosong University, Korea; Prof. Wei Pu (Chinese name), Director of Confucius Institute at Washington State, USA; and Dr NGO BAYIHA Jeanne Berthe Epse NYEMB NTOOGUE, National Pedagogic Inspector for Chinese Language at the Ministry of Secondary Education of Cameroon. The guests agreed that the workshop would promote mutual understanding between Chinese and foreign young scholars and contribute to the building of a community with shared future for mankind. Hsin-Tzu Kuo, doctoral student of China Studies Program from South Africa, spoke on behalf of the doctoral students in China Studies Program, thanking CLEC for creating the China Studies Program platform for learners around the world to gather and work together on China studies.

The workshop specially invited Professor Cui Xiliang from Beijing Language and Culture University, Professor Zheng Yanqun from Beijing Language and Culture University, Professor Li Baogui from Liaoning Normal University, Professor Hai Lu from Minzu University of China, Professor Lei Hanqing from Sichuan University and other experts in the field of international Chinese language education to give in-depth lectures and guiding keynote reports on common topics in the papers submitted by doctoral students. The lectures and reports included an overview of various research topics in international Chinese language education from macro, meso and micro levels, the Development of Chinese Language Teachers in the Context of Digital Transformation, the Characteristics and Development Strategies of Chinese Language into the National Educational Systems of Various Countries, the Core Topics and Disciplinary Cooperation in International Chinese Language Education Research of Core Journals in Recent Years, and the Dictionary Revision Project in the New Era with the Chinese Dictionary as a sample, which have broadened the academic horizons of young scholars, provided interdisciplinary ideas to them and guided their future research, bringing a wonderful academic feast to all the participants.

The workshop consisted of five parallel forums, focusing on the topics of “Comparative Research on Chinese Language, Culture and Education”, “Research on the Localization of Overseas Chinese Language Education”, “Research on the Digital Transformation of International Chinese Language Education”, “International Chinese Language Education and International Cultural Communication”, and “Research on Chinese Ontology and International Chinese Language Education”. “The topics presented by the doctoral students from different countries from their individual research perspectives enriched the knowledge of the audience of the forum on the details of the world language and culture, deepened the practical path of international Chinese language education, expanded the understanding of the academic community on the issue of Chinese ontology from different perspectives, and strengthened the ontological basis of international Chinese language education. Their research and understanding of hot topics such as the Research and Practice of Multimedia Hybrid Teaching Mode, the Teaching Mode of Situational Experience under the Vision of “Meta-universe”, the Use of New Media Resources, the Study of Digitalization of Textbooks, and the Application of “Game Technology” in Second Language Learning, have reflected the keen insight and scientific breakthrough of young scholars. Throughout the workshop, the doctoral students demonstrated a relatively deep theoretical foundation and academic quality, broad research horizons, and a close integration with contemporary topics, as reflects the promising and pioneering characteristics of contemporary young scholars and their active thinking.

Prior to this event, the China Studies Program held a sociology workshop entitled “Social Transformation and Development in China in the New Era” in collaboration with Renmin University of China; a workshop on “International Education in post-pandemic era: Trends and Prospects” in collaboration with Peking University; and a workshop on “Translation and Research: A World Tour of Chinese Cultural Classics” in collaboration with Wuhan University, attracting nearly 300 young students and scholars from over 50 countries. Many Chinese and foreign experts, scholars and journal editors also provided targeted academic guidance to young scholars, helping them to further improve their academic writing and academic expression, enhance people-to-people, cultural and academic exchanges, and cultivate the new generation of young sinologists.

China Studies Program is a high-end international academic exchange program created by CLEC, aiming to cultivate a team of young professionals with excellent Chinese language proficiency, diverse cultural backgrounds, and outstanding research abilities in Sinology and China studies through various professional training and academic cooperation programs, and to promote the intercultural, interprofessional, and interdisciplinary development of Sinology and China studies.

In the past ten years, China Studies Program has provided more than 800 overseas students from more than 90 countries with opportunities to study for doctoral degrees or conduct training at top universities in China. The program has formed a chain of continuous attention to the growth of young scholars, from the application stage to the training stage with master classes, workshops, academic training, and doctoral dissertation funding for publication after graduation, international conferences, and teaching support, etc. We are currently recruiting applications for the 2023 Ph.D. program.
