White Exodus: A Cautionary Tale of Over Correction and Extremism

Lee Wellington, author of The Office Zoo and The Only Girl in the Room, has just released her latest work of fiction, White Exodus, now available on Amazon and  Barnes and Noble.

White Exodus is a cautionary tale about what might happen when social movements and government policies meant to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion overcorrect, and wind up causing new and extreme forms of discrimination. As California suffers from this overcorrection, white residents leave the state in droves as new and troubling problems arise.

From White Exodus:

“By 2035 the exodus of white Californians was almost complete.

After many years in which the state had carefully and gradually crafted policies that discriminated against whites in the service of diversity, equity, and inclusion,  even the few remaining holdouts might soon be gone. For most whites, the increasing burden of white-specific taxes, social isolation, and unrestrained harassment made leaving a better alternative than staying. No one  who mattered wanted to stop their departure or, worse,  see a rebound in the number of white California  residents.”

Through the characters in the book, Wellington paints a  bleak picture of a state divided along racial lines, where fear and suspicion govern daily life. The story raises important questions about how changes meant to foster amity between races can instead drive a wedge between them, leading to hostility and violence.

White Exodus is a work of fact-based fiction, inspired by  Phase I of Oakland’s 2021 Universal Basic Income pilot program, which barred whites from participating. In  Wellington’s imaginative look at California’s possible future, after 2024 there are state taxes paid only by whites to fund the state’s reparations payments, and workplaces are monitored by members of Diversity,  Equity, and Inclusion United, the union formed to link diversocrats across the state. DEI United, hyper-alert for racial offenses committed by whites, is empowered to mete out punishment for any of a long list of racial macroaggressions. Police look the other way as public violence against whites escalates. Former friends and colleagues shun them, afraid of being accused of being white sympathizers. A vigilante movement encourages all citizens to turn white Californians in for the slightest racial transgression committed in public. The state has deteriorated as tax revenue plunged in the wake of the white exodus.

Lee Wellington’s book explores the consequences of such a society, and asks whether California could ever recover to become the vibrant, healthy, and tolerant state, it once was. Through the characters in the book, the author hopes to spark conversations about the importance of inclusivity and tolerance in society.

Wellington, a long-time California resident, lives in San  Jose, CA, with her husband and cat. She holds a B.A. in  English, Summa Cum Laude, from San Jose State  University.
