Charging Point Network Growth in Europe

Starting from May 2023, the Charge Point Monitor exclusively displays data from charge stations equipped with type 2 connectors. This decision was taken in accordance with the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Directive 2019/94/EU (AFID). This guideline strongly recommends that all recharging points be fitted with type 2 Mennekes socket outlets or vehicle connectors (for AC normal and high power recharging points) and CCS/Combo 2 connectors (for DC high power recharging points) to ensure interoperability. As a result, some countries or areas have fewer charging stations than originally reported.

The Charge Point Monitor data is subject to change. Continuous efforts to quality-check and improve the data may result in adjustments in the trend line. Users are not allowed to copy, monitor, republish, or share any portion of the data. However, visuals and key numbers may be shared.

Data on the “Europe” page is based on the entire continent (51 countries). Users can click on any of the 16 countries to view more detailed data and statistics for that country.

All statistics and graphs are updated monthly, except for city rankings, which are updated quarterly.

Charge points: All charge points are measured in EVSE; EVSE controls the power supply to a single EV in a single session. An EVSE may provide multiple connectors, but only one of these connectors can be active at a time.

AC (0-22kWh): Charge points with a power output between 0-22 kWh. Data showed that the 22kW charger was rounded up to 23kW. Since there are still a range of 22-43kW AC chargers, the upper limit for the 23kWh): Charge points with a power output of >23 kWh.DC: Charge points with a power output between 23-99 kWh.HPC: Charge points with a power output of 100+ kWh.

Public: Assigned when the locations can be accessed 24/7 by everyone.Semi-public: Assigned when the charging points are erected on private domain that are subject to specific, though non-discriminatory access restrictions, such as the usage of opening and closing hours as a requirement to use the associated facilities. For example, the recharging points in car parks of large warehouses or convenience stores, underground car parks, hotel and catering establishments, etc.

Top cities: Ranking determined by the number of charge points in the municipality of the city.
