Linbeck Group, a technology-driven building construction firm, was awarded a 2016 Project Achievement Award in the category of “New Construction – Less than $25 Million” for Texas Christian University’s Mary Couts Burnett Library addition and renovation. The Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) – North Texas Chapter presented the award to Linbeck May 26 during the CMAA annual awards gala.
“The professionalism used during the project by Linbeck directly contributed to an outstanding achievement. A testament to quality project management was that library staff were involved in design and construction decisions,” said Dr. June Koelker, Library Dean, TCU “Linbeck and their team went to extraordinary means to protect TCU’s rare book and archives materials.”
Originally built in 1923, a 58,000-square-foot addition and comprehensive renovation of 20,000-square feet of existing space breathed new life into the Mary Couts Burnett Library. The revitalized library features a Lizard Lounge for social gatherings, a 3D printing lab, the “Sand Box” containing the latest technologies available, writable walls in common areas and meeting rooms, and the Café Bistro, serving beverages and assorted snack items.
In addition to a soaring new atrium, a combination of durable materials and modern design elements includes 33-foot-high perforated wood ceilings, terrazzo floors, and stairs and seating using Austin limestone. Behind the limestone steps sits a “TCU Purple Wave” elliptical bench.
The enhanced cast stone exterior and columns of the new facility were inspired by the Neoclassical Architecture of the original 1923 construction. The new façade included a replication of the original west entry and an elaborate pergola on the south elevation serves as a student gathering space.
The project was built by Linbeck under a Construction Manager at Risk engagement with Texas Christian University. Construction on the project began in the summer of 2014 and was completed on time and under budget.
