Tell us about Dyami and the Gobi Crystal.

In Dyami and the Gobi Crystal, readers will venture into an enchanting and mystical world ruled by a queen and king with an insatiable thirst for power.

The story features Dyami, a fledgling angel charged with the extraordinary task of observing and chronicling a realm where magic comes alive. With her gobi crystal, she diligently records unfolding events. Her mission is a delicate dance of observation, with the golden rule being non-interference in mortal affairs.

Guided by her mentor, a wise, shape-shifting dragon, Dyami’s journey introduces her to a vibrant cast of characters including an irritable sorcerer, a whimsical fairy, and the peaceful Dukán who seek change from their otherwise mundane lives. When a king and queen arrive, offering a tantalizing promise of change and excitement, they decide to establish a new realm. Yet, as Dyami had feared, the royals quickly exploited the Dukán, turning them into unwilling servants.

With a heavy heart, Dyami grapples with fear, anger, and betrayal in a desperate desire to intervene. Like the quandaries faced by Lucy in Narnia or Meg in A Wrinkle in Time, Dyami is confronted with a profound choice: abide by the rules or risk everything for those she loves.

What inspired you to write Dyami and the Gobi Crystal?

Over the past few years, many people have felt despair, fear, and isolation. I wrote Dyami and the Gobi Crystal to share universal truths of love and hope as an alternative. Using allegory to discuss complex themes including individuality, self-determination, compassion, and the corruptible nature of power, I constructed a mythical, magical world designed to appeal to young people.

How did your background and experience influence your writing?

My background in spirituality, mythology, and teaching were essential building blocks in writing for young readers.

As a young girl, I read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis and never forgot how books could be so magical. At seventeen, I went on a foreign exchange in India and my world expanded with the rich cultures, spices, and religions. Both my undergraduate and graduate degrees drew me deeper into mythologies and spiritual traditions. In 2019, I discovered the Kabbalah and wondered how to infuse spiritual concepts into fiction without sounding religious. When the Earth stood still in 2020, I combined my knowledge, experience and love of fantasy to develop the fantastical world in Dyami and the Gobi Crystal as a way to appeal to readers both young and old while conveying deeper truths.

What is one message you would like readers to remember?

As difficult as life may be, don’t suppress your emotions, thinking they make you look weak. Feel them and release them when it’s time. Also, remember that you have the power to change the world—even in small ways, through loving acts.
