Tell us about Seasons of a Psychotherapist’s Soul.

Seasons of a Psychotherapist’s Soul offers a deeply personal look into the life of Dr. Bob, a fictionalized clinical psychologist on the cusp of retirement after nearly 50 years of practice. Through a series of brief vignettes, I reflect on the wide array of clients I’ve encountered—each with their unique struggles—and how their journeys have influenced my own. The stories delve into the challenges, quirks, and humanity of those seeking help, as well as my own internal responses as a psychotherapist.

The book is filled with humor, empathy, and reflection as Dr. Bob navigates his own personal growth alongside his professional experiences. While maintaining clear ethical boundaries, the stories touch on the complexities of the psychotherapist-client relationship, revealing the mutual impact both parties have on each other. It’s a celebration of human connection, insight, and the privilege of being invited into the most intimate aspects of others’ lives.

What inspired you to write Seasons of a Psychotherapist’s Soul?

I was inspired to write Seasons of a Psychotherapist’s Soul to make the practice of psychotherapy less intimidating, and to reveal the humanness of psychotherapists.

How did your background and experience influence your writing?

Writing has always been intriguing to me, as have the lives of people—learning about what makes them “tick,” why they make the choices they do, and how they become aware of, understand, and alter the trajectories of their lives.

As a child, my nightly ritual included my parents reading to me. Whether it was their presence, the colors and characters in the story books, or the flights into imaginary worlds, the result was the same—I fell in love with words and how they could transport me.

Throughout high school, college, and graduate studies, my passion for words remained a staple. Twenty years ago, I embraced that passion and decided to write.

In 2015, with a reluctant leap of faith and much assistance from great editors, I created the website www.yourreluctantdisciple.com and have been writing posts for it ever since. From that writing practice came the needed “push” to write my first book, Faith, Doubt, and Listening: Lessons Learned By A Reluctant Disciple. Seasons of a Psychotherapist’s Soul is now my second book.

What is one message you would like readers to remember?

I would like readers to remember that listening and getting to know themselves can be uncomfortable but leads to living a healthier, more fulfilling life.
