A Guide to Fighting Mycoplasma Pneumonia

Mycoplasma pneumoniae, the smallest microorganism between bacteria and viruses known to survive on its own, instigates inflammation in the lungs, affecting the bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, and interstitium. It has no cell wall structure and can be killed by disinfectants such as 75% alcohol and chlorine-based agents.

Primarily impacting children and adolescents aged 5 and above, M. pneumoniae infection is predominantly transmitted via droplets, with an incubation period spanning one to three weeks, and infection sources including both symptomatic patients and asymptomatic carriers. However, M. pneumoniae is not highly contagious, contrasting with the widespread transmission characteristic of diseases like COVID-19. At present, there is no vaccine available for M. pneumoniae infection, so the key preventive measures are to develop good personal hygiene practices, improve one’s own immunity, and maintain social distance.

1. Avoid crowded and poorly ventilated public spaces. If such visits are unavoidable, wear a facemask;

2. Prioritize indoor ventilation particularly during peak epidemic seasons. Ventilate rooms for no less than 30 minutes at a time for fresh air.

3. Practice thorough hand hygiene by using soap and hand sanitizer under running water. If running water is unavailable, effectively sanitize hands by rubbing them with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

4. Guard against droplet transmission by using tissues to cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, or use your elbow or sleeve for coverage. Dispose of used tissues in a lidded garbage can.

5. Adopt healthy living habits, exercise moderately to boost immunity, and stay warm to prevent catching a cold.

6. If infected with M. pneumoniae virus, do not panic; instead, seek guidance from a doctor or pharmacist for appropriate medication choices.

To mitigate the impact of the virus on the population, it is not only necessary to publicize epidemic prevention knowledge on public platforms to raise awareness, but also to implement robust epidemic prevention measures within institutions during periods of high prevalence of viral infections. Sterilization is a measure important for controlling cross-infection among patients, and it has positive effects on treatment outcomes and the optimization of the overall hospital treatment environment. Therefore, it is imperative to implement thorough sterilization procedures in laboratories and medical institutions to effectively curb the spread of diseases.
