Singapore Management University (SMU) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will jointly organize an interdisciplinary Global Forum titled “A Whole New World with Computational Social Science (CSS): Transdisciplinary Insights” on 23 June 2023 in Hong Kong, aiming to share insights and experiences in defining societal issues and addressing related challenges in the emerging field of Computational Social Science.
Digital technologies are rapidly transforming our society. Generation Alpha (aka Generation AI) will succeed their Generation Y parents (the digital natives) and Generation Z elder siblings (the zoomers). We have entered a whole new world.
Evidence-based data science promises that decisions will be based on nuanced, accurate and dynamic data-driven insights. Digital transformation promises to increase efficiency and productivity and inspire products and services for the design of sustainable and liveable cities. The trillion-dollar question is: how?
Meanwhile, new challenges arise. Garbage-in-garbage-out: how can citizens protect themselves and be protected from ill-founded insights derived from flawed algorithms and invalid data? Will generative AI and androids replace human jobs? What are human-only abilities and how can we optimise human-AI partnership in work and life? In a world where humans and AI co-create and share knowledge, how shall we redefine ownership of intellectual properties and realign our laws, norms, policies and practices with the new definition? How can citizens personal data be protected from unwanted access, misuse and abuse?
In this Global Forum, computational scientists, social scientists and related practitioners from Singapore, Hong Kong and Korea will gather to discuss these important topics.
Prof. Lily Kong, President of Singapore Management University, and Prof. Rocky S. Tuan, President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, will attend the forum and deliver welcome remarks. Mr. Ong Siew Gay, Consul General of Singapore in Hong Kong, will be the Guest of Honour and deliver the opening address.
There will be two keynote panel discussions during the Forum. The morning session is titled “Evidence-based CSS: Insights from Academia”. The panelists will include Prof. David Chan, Lee Kong Chian Professor of Psychology, Director of Behavioural Sciences Initiative, SMU; Prof. Jeroen van Ameijde, Assistant Professor of School of Architecture, CUHK; Prof. Jeong-han Kang, Professor of Sociology, Yonsei University. Prof. Chi-Yue Chiu, Chi-Yue Chiu, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Psychology, Dean of Social Science, CUHK, will be the moderator of the morning panel. The theme of the afternoon discussion is “CSS-empowered New World: Insights from Policy and Practice”. The panelists will involve Dr. David Hanson, CEO of Hanson Robotics; Prof. Lisa Wan, Associate Professor of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management and Department of Marketing, CUHK; Mr. William Hui, Head of IT Innovation, Research and Development, Manulife International Ltd; and Dr. Zhen Luo, Founder of ParityBit. The moderate of the afternoon session will be Prof. Zhu Feida, Associate Professor of Computer Science, Associate Dean (Partnership & Engagement), School of Computing and Information Systems, SMU.
The forum will allow scholars and industry experts to share their research results and application experiences in the area of computational social science and explore new areas of research and opportunities. It will also help promote the interdisciplinary insights in academia and practice, and serves as a platform for the collaboration between social science and computational science to find solutions to the real-world problems and tackle the challenges facing this emerging field.
