Albemarle County Opens Waiting Lists for Housing Voucher Programs, Providing Assistance for Eligible Families

Albemarle County, Virginia, has opened waiting lists for several of its housing voucher programs, including Housing Choice, Treesdale 3-Bedroom, Crozet Meadows, and Scottsville School Apartments. These programs provide monthly rental subsidies to eligible families to help them obtain safe and affordable housing. The program aims to help families with housing needs, and participating families pay about 30 percent of their adjusted income towards rent, while the Albemarle County Office of Housing pays the rest of the balance using money from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Albemarle County Department of Social Services’ Office of Housing moved to a lottery-based waiting list system last year due to the high demand for these vouchers. Once the application period has closed, a fixed number of completed applications will be randomly selected, and those applicants will be placed in the spots available. To qualify for these programs, applicants must meet certain eligibility criteria, including residency, veteran status, homelessness or previous homelessness, and disability status. Once a family is on a waiting list, ACOH will rank them, considering local preferences such as those mentioned above.

Applications for the waiting lists will be accepted until April 13th and must be submitted through ACOH’s Housing Portal. NO PAPER APPLICATIONS WILL BE PROVIDED OR ACCEPTED. ACOH encourages interested individuals to register for a Housing Portal account before the waiting lists open, and those who need assistance applying can schedule an appointment or visit during designated walk-in times.

The program preferences mentioned above are important to consider when eventually applying for these waiting lists. The local preferences used by ACOH can help move families to the top of some of the waitlists. For instance, those who are experiencing homelessness or have previously experienced homelessness and are currently in permanent supportive housing or rapid re-housing projects qualify for homeless preference. Residency preference is given to families who live, work, or have been hired to work in Albemarle County. Veteran’s preference is available to current members of the U.S. Armed Forces, veterans who were discharged or released from service under conditions other than dishonorable, or surviving spouses of veterans. Preferences are also available for families that include victims of domestic violence, dating violence, physical assault, or stalking and disabled persons or families with a disabled member.

ACOH reminds those on the waiting list that reception of a voucher takes time, and calls to request a status update will not help move your application through the system more quickly. ACOH works daily to help clients secure safe, secure housing and will serve them as soon as possible. The voucher program aims to help eligible families with housing needs, and the Albemarle County Office of Housing is committed to helping families secure safe and affordable housing.

It is important to note that the number of spots open are for spots on the waiting list, not vouchers immediately available. Late and/or incomplete applications will not be accepted. The HCV Waiting List will remain open indefinitely to accept Family Unification Program (FUP) Voucher Referrals Only. Referrals must be made through Albemarle County’s Department of Social Services as a Public Child Welfare Agency. Please do not contact the office directly for a referral.

Overall, these waiting lists offer a critical resource for families who are struggling to find safe and affordable housing in Albemarle County. The lottery-based system ensures that there is equal opportunity for all to apply, and the program preferences allow for some families to be moved to the top of the waitlists. It is important to apply for as many waiting lists as you are eligible for, but not apply to a list if you are not eligible. Families must take advantage of this opportunity to secure safe and affordable housing through these programs in Albemarle County. For more information
