Alfa Chemistry, a leading chemical company in New York, announced to provide functionized ionic liquids for their customers in a variety of applications on January 25, 2019.
An ionic liquid is a salt composed entirely of ions. Typical properties of ionic liquids include high thermal stability, low flammability, electrical conductivity, and the ability to solvate various organic and inorganic compounds. A functionalized ionic liquid refers to an ionic liquid containing a specific functional group such as a hydroxyl group, an amine, a sulfonate, a nitrile, an ether, a benzyl group, a carboxyl group, an ester group, a mercapto group, an alkenyl group, or a phosphate group. And the functionalized ionic liquids are typically prepared by introducing functional groups into the cation.
The applications of functionized ionic liquids are as below:
As reaction media
By using the specific properties of the functionalized ionic liquid, some special reactions can be carried out. Functionalized ionic liquids can be used as anchoring and coordinating ligands in homogeneous catalytic processes and can be used to avoid catalyst leaching from the ionic layer. This is especially important for reactions that use expensive transition metals and expensive ligands.
Application in synthesis of porous materials
Porous materials are generally prepared in aqueous solutions at elevated temperatures and pressures in a sealed autoclave. The synthesis of porous materials can also be carried out in ionic liquids. And ionic liquids have the advantage of being recyclable compared to other solvents.
As surface modifiers
Ionic liquids have adjustable hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, so they can be used as surface modifiers. Ionic liquids consist of cations and anions that can interact with solid surfaces such as silica gel and molecular sieves and control the wettability of solid surfaces by exchanging anions.
As lubricants
The low vapor pressure of the ionic liquid makes it a common lubricant for steel/metal, steel/SiO 2, Si3N4/SiO2 , steel/ceramic systems. As a lubricant, ionic liquid has many advantages including excellent friction reduction, wear resistance and high load carrying capacity.
Application in nanotechnology
Ionic liquids are also widely used in nanotechnology. The excellent physicochemical properties of ionic liquids can be used to increase the thermal and electrochemical stability of nanoparticles, so they are often used as reinforcing agents and stabilizers for nanomaterials. For example, ionic liquids can be used to synthesize metal nanoparticles and 3D semiconductor particles. The advantages of using ionic liquids in nanotechnology are strong thermal stability and electrochemical stability, controllable particle size, high electrical conductivity and low toxicity. The combination of nanomaterials and ionic liquids can also be applied to the development of drug delivery systems.
As cleaning materials
Ionic liquids can also be used in cleaning techniques such as desulfurization for fuels and flowing gases. Sulfur-containing fuels are a major cause of air pollution, and thiol-functionalized ionic liquids can be used to adsorb SO2 in the atmosphere. The adsorption of SO2 by the thiol-functionalized ionic liquid can reach 0.305 g SO2/g ionic liquid. The advantage of using functionalized ionic liquids to treat harmful substances in the atmosphere is that there are many types of ionic liquids to choose from. In addition, the interaction of ionic liquids between hazardous substances can help achieve controllable adsorption/desorption, opening up a new way to control air pollution.
Some functionized ionic liquids provided by Alfa Chemistry:
Choline Chloride; 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide; 1-benzyl-2,3-methylimidazolium bromide; 1-benzyl-2,3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate; 1-Allyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate; 1-(Propyltrimethoxyl)-3-methylimidazolium chloride; N-butylsulfonate Pyridinium trifluoromethanesulfonate; 1-Allyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate; Guanidine carbonate
“In consideration of the increasing demanding for ionic liquid products, we decide to provide functionized ionic liquids to enlarge our product lines.” Said Brenda Randy, the Marketing Manager of Alfa Chemistry. “In addition to functionized ionic liquids, we also provide ammonium ionic liquids, imidazolium ionic liquids, morpholinium ionic liquids, phosphonium ionic liquids, piperidinium ionic liquids, pyridinium ionic liquids and pyrrolidinium ionic liquids. And these products can meet the needs of various applications for our customers.”
