On March 24th, 2022, Peter Thoegersen’s new album entitled ALIEN MUSIC will be released on Magic&Unique Records.
Born in Los Angeles in 1967, Thoegersen received his Doctorate in Music Composition at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 2012, writing his thesis on Polytempic Polymicrotonal Music, which is now coming out as a book.
This composer currently living in Portland – Oregon, began music as a drummer, extrapolating rhythms and exploring polytempo and four way independence, wherein each independent “limb” became its own part, or voice, with its own tempo, and ultimately, its own microtonal system – approaching a radical new polyphony not yet practiced in any musical literature.
Polytempic Polymicrotonality music offers a great expansive potential for the re-emergence and renewed ideas of pitch and rhythm, in contrast to the extended technique noise gestures so prevalent in academic music today.
ALIEN MUSIC (Magic&Unique Records) is the first Album by Peter Thoegersen in polytempic polymicrotonality dealing with the idea of four-part total independence in music and part writing extending from the viewpoint of the drumset. The snare is in 4/4, the bass drum is in 5/4, the ride cymbal is in 7/4, and the hi-hat is in ¾ time, all with a common downbeat.
Additional synthesized microtonal instruments accompany the lines as they each split off in their own meter, tempo, and tuning, where the drums extemporize in each individual meter/tempo, coming back to da capo with all four parts playing as in a quasi rondo form, where A is the “head” and B, C, D, and E are the isolated meters developing their own musical line before coming back to the A “head” section.
ALIEN MUSIC represents how music in the 21st century has incorporated both the drumset and synthesizers, two of the 20th century’s modern musical inventions characterized by rocknroll and jazz, into contemporary composition.
Polytempic Polymicrotonal music is a musical allegory for pluralism; as there are many cultures, religions, and races living on one planet, there are also many separate instances of musical systems at work in one composition showing how disparate idiosyncratic parts can create a single unified whole.
This album will be available on Spotify and all Digital Music Streaming Services around the World from March 24th, 2022.
