Alternatives to Prescriptions May Help Relieve Pain, Support Addiction Recovery, Says Chapters Capistrano

Prescription pain relievers such as opioids are not the only way to combat pain. Chapters Capistrano provides insight on more holistic methods.

The opioid epidemic has been headline news recently with more attention being given to awareness, prevention, and treatment options. Although millions of people struggle with addiction, only a fraction receive the help they need to enter into recovery. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently updated their guidelines to encourage physicians to try non-opioid medications first, as well as non-medication alternatives such as exercise. Chapters Capistrano, a drug and alcohol treatment center in Orange County, has released a statement to the press regarding the benefits of alternative options for pain relief for those in recovery.

“Pain is something that no one likes to experience, especially if it’s chronic,” says Susie Shea, co-owner of the California rehab center. “This can be a major trigger for substance use as way of self-medicating, but it can also lead to addiction to opioid pain killers. However, these medications are a temporary fix and not meant for long-term relief. Turning to alternative options can not only help to relieve pain but also reduce risk for addiction.”

A recent study found that mindfulness meditation may help reduce pain and discomfort for individuals. This is a practice that is already incorporated into many addiction treatment programs and often used as a way to manage stress. Its effects may be even more far reaching. According to Dr. Fadel Zeidan, assistant professor of neurobiology and anatomy at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center who worked on the study, “The study adds to the growing body of evidence that something unique is happening with how meditation reduces pain. These findings are especially significant to those who have built up a tolerance to opiate-based drugs and are looking for non-addictive ways to reduce their pain.”

In addition to meditation, Shea also values the importance of physical activity. Exercise can strengthen muscles and improve flexibility which may help with pain relief. Working with a physical therapist can help clients to identify specific exercises that may benefit them in relieving chronic pain. Exercise can also be a great way of managing weight which can reduce stress on the joints and muscles and may provide relief as well.

“Other options that we offer clients include acupuncture and massage therapy,” says Shea. “Many find that these holistic therapies also help with the healing process by reducing stress and pain while boosting energy and mood.”

According to the CDC, “in many cases, opioid drugs do a poorer job than other therapies in lessening pain.” There are many alternatives available and research continues to find effective ways of providing relief without the risk of addiction. The CDC recommends that if opioids are being prescribed, it only be for a few days rather than a few weeks.

Attitudes toward prescription pain relievers are changing, notes Shea, and more people are turning to healthier and more holistic options for treatment. Chapters Capistrano provides customized treatment plans to support clients in overcoming addiction and developing healthier routines and coping mechanisms to prevent relapse.
