When artist and art educator Marcia Gladwish began to explore Jesus’ encounters with women in Scripture, she discovered evidence of the great value he placed on them. Gladwish says, “I also wanted to find out if one could have a hard story, and if Jesus still wanted a relationship with that person. I found that Jesus loves women as much as men and people with hard stories. He often chose to single out women to extend worth and value to them in a male-dominated culture.”

Out of the findings of her search she wrote The Drink of a Lifetime (Redemption Press 2017), the story of the Samaritan woman at the well. When this woman had a life-changing, cross-cultural encounter with Jesus, she found he loved her and offered her eternal life—“living water”—despite knowing her story. Gladwish melds her storytelling skills with art in this unique combination of collaged art and biblical narrative. She emphasizes that Jesus knows our life stories. She says, “Similarly, each of us has dark or hard parts in our stories, but Jesus will meet us in those places with hope and eternal life.”

Gladwish, who was educated as an artist at Sweet Briar College and Stony Brook University, has been an elementary school and art teacher, a world traveler, and cross-cultural Bible storyteller. Her art is currently expressed in painting vivid watercolors and making collaged books. It doesn’t matter how unimportant or unworthy you may feel, your story matters to Jesus.”
