Thomas graduated from Yenching University in Beijing. World War II broke out followed by the Communist Revolution (1946) forcing the entire family to seek refuge in Hong Kong where he became an English professor and wrote articles for a newspaper.
After this episode in their lives, the Luke family moved to Okinawa and Thomas was recruited by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as a translator. Meanwhile, Mark finished school with honors and joined the football team earning him a scholarship to Trinity College. Here Mark met college acquaintances during the Vietnam War and Civil Rights period. He traveled widely in the USA and Western Europe.

From a boy in Okinawa (Japan), Mark was introduced to the excitement of university life in America experiencing numerous changes and learning about the American culture and traditions towards the end of the 1960s.
The scene starts at Trinity College. Lottery selected three of his roommates, and the quest commences forcing Mark to make discoveries about himself and other people. These are young individuals with lineage. They came from reputable preparatory schools in the East Coast like Choate Rosemary Hall and Wellesley College.
Mark was quiet at the outset and simply observed his surroundings. Later on, he became immersed entirely in American campus life. The book is suitable for youngsters who come from foreign countries to study for the first time in the United States. “Mark’s Journey to the West” is both captivating and insightful.
