It’s a book that left one reviewer “a little speechless”. The book is titled Emerging From the Dark, and the reviewer Teresa James wrote that “each page takes you on a journey” which made her feel “very emotional”.
Stroke; it’s the second major cause of death and disability worldwide with more than 13 million new cases annually. For stroke survivors like Terence Ang, whose first book A Cry in the Dark was published last year, life has to be relearned as part of starting over. While the first book recounted the author’s experience in the hospital, the new book is meant to provide overall healing for himself and other stroke survivors, as well as to enable more people to be informed about stroke.
Currently available online, Emerging From the Dark has been getting rave reviews. Bridget Ball of Booked With Bridget wrote: “I wish I had the book at the time to help me understand and see the light at the end of the tunnel”, referring to the time she was taking care of her mother. She added: “This book would be wonderful for victims of stroke as well as their friends, family and caregivers. I honestly think it should be given out upon diagnosis. It is a great message of strength to be enjoyed by all.”
After being afflicted by stroke, Terence’s right hand could no longer function like it used to. The hand became a stranger to him, and using it was painful and agonizing. In the end, the author wrote not one but two books that are interspersed with illustrations drawn by the author’s own hand and reflect his different moods as he goes through life’s challenges. The books demonstrated his courageous spirit, grit, and determination as he fights to build his life. “As a stroke survivor, I did not want to feel helpless. That’s why I made the effort to produce all the drawings and their captions with my own hand. I hope this would in turn help to motivate other stroke survivors,” says Terence. Reviewer Toni Woodruff opined that “nearly each page is Instagrammable with memorable and meaningful quotes.”
As each individual’s struggle is different and personal, Emerging From the Dark features stories from other stroke survivors and their caregivers. “Each stroke survivor has a different story to tell, but we can all learn from one another and also motivate each other,” says Terence. “Going forward, I am creating a community that will also provide an avenue for more individuals to share their stories.”
