The third graders at Avocado Elementary School in the Cajon Valley Union School District were tasked with creating something to learn about, celebrate, and teach the rich history of the Kumeyaay people. It took over a month to make, but the Avocado Kumeyaay Museum came together with artifacts, hands-on experiences, and authentic looking replications of a Kumeyaay Village.
Third grade teacher, Tracy Geisinger said that they were so excited to present this project to their students. The museum they made blended together multiples avenues of curriculum areas, including World of Work, Social Studies, writing, and presentation literacy. Every student was assigned a task or job to make the museum possible based on their RIASEC code. Each student also gave a presentation on an artifact that they recreated from Kumeyaay culture to be as authentic as possible.
The Kumeyaay people were the first people to settle in the San Diego area, and evidence of them dates back thousands of years. One student said that learning about the Kumeyaay people helped their class understand how the Kumeyaays used their resources and took care of the Earth. Another student felt that studying the Kumeyaay people was important for their class to learn about San Diego history, especially since the Kumeyaays could be their ancestors!
