Visual artist and photographer Jia Hao presents “Tropical Spark,” a documentary photography project. The documentary depicts the life of Xiao and her family against the backdrop story of Southwest China’s rubber industry. This engaging series presents a sincere and impartial look into the lives, challenges, and changes a rural community faces during an urban expansion.
Jia Hao, based in Yunnan province, China, is an alumnus of the State University of New York at Albany. The artist has earned acknowledgment and appreciation for her work exploring cultural and social themes that are acrimonious and hard to digest. Her photographs have been exhibited in prestigious venues like the Vacant Online Museum and the Dali International Photography Exhibition.
The pivotal matter discussed in “Tropical Spark” is the story of Xiao, whose grandparents, motivated by a sense of responsibility, moved to Southwest China in the 1960s intending to develop rubber plantations. The series presents Xiao’s contemplations on her life that connect the dots between rural heritage and urban life experiences. Her persona sensitively expresses the community’s transformation and the personal histories connected with these massive changes.
“This project is about capturing the subtle realities of a family adapting to change over generations,” said Jia Hao. “It’s about the connection between people and the landscape they inhabit and how this evolves.”
Jia Hao documents the loss of Xiao’s parents and the commitment of her grandparents to the land. A contrast between the growing urban environment and the steadfast rural life nourishes the central theme. This highlights the adaptability and resilience of motivated yet struggling individuals like Xiao. “I aimed to create more than just images as I always want to capture the essence of change and continuity in the heart of communities. This series is a personal exploration of how individual stories are interwoven into the larger fabric of societal transformation,” says Jia Hao.
Following her global travels and return to her hometown in 2019, Jia Hao began focusing on documenting the ethnic culture of Yunnan. Her documentary reflects this focus. She has offered her audience an intimate portrayal of a community navigating the subtle differences of progress and tradition.
Jia Hao and “Tropical Spark” invite everyone to engage with a narrative that touches on universal experiences of change, legacy, and adaptation in almost every part of the planet.
