Norman Dexter, South Georgia born, widely known in the art world as Selah – Soul Of The Brush, is celebrating the induction of one of his exceptional art pieces into the prestigious Smithsonian collection.  The artwork titled “Remembering Ummah” was officially included in the Smithsonian (NMAAHC) in September 2016.  Selah – Soul of the Brush Artwork https://nmaahc.si.edu/object/nmaahc_2015.265

Selah’s journey in the world of art began at the age of eight when he discovered his passion while watching his cousin, who was also eight-years-old, draw in an alley in Cordele, Georgia. Since then, his dedication to the arts has taken him on countless journeys, spanning across various cities and countries worldwide, including Georgia, Detroit, New York, and Washington D.C., all the way to Japan, to name a few.

Selah is renowned for his diverse artistic portfolio, which encompasses murals, sculptures, live paintings, and more. His artistic creations have found homes in galleries and collections around the globe, leaving an indelible mark on the art scene.

One of the most remarkable achievements in Selah’s career is the induction of his artwork into the Smithsonian collection. The painting inducted is a portrait of the renowned composer and musician James “Dewitt” Yancey, known artistically as J Dilla.  Yancy had a prolific career marked by a series of singles and remix projects. He worked with various artists, including; Something for the People, Brand New Heavies, renowned hip-hop acts like Busta Rhymes, Janet Jackson, De La Soul, The Pharcyde, Crustation, A Tribe Called Quest, and Q-Tip’s solo album, among others.  Many of his productions were released without his individual credit, instead attributed to the Ummah, a production collective comprising himself, Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest, Q-Tip, and later Raphael Saadiq of Tony! Toni! Toné!. Nevertheless, he received songwriting credit for all of his non-remix productions within the Ummah. His work serves as a lasting testament to his artistic prowess.

For detailed information on the artwork, you can visit the Smithsonian’s official website.

In addition to his remarkable artistic achievements, Selah is also known for his custom-built furniture pieces, each one a testament to his unique design sensibilities and craftsmanship.

As we celebrate this significant milestone, Selah extends his heartfelt gratitude to his supporters, art enthusiasts, and the institutions that have recognized his contributions to the world of art.  This press release not only commemorates the anniversary but also serves as a reminder that Selah continues to make an indelible mark in the world of art.
