On April 7th and 8th, 2023, Anip Patel, CEO of CaPatel Investments, hosted the first Mohan Matchmaking Convention in Chicago, IL. The convention was created to provide a safe and inclusive environment for South Asian singles from all walks of life to find their perfect match and make meaningful connections.
Patel came up with the idea for the convention after posting a meme on social media telling single people to connect in the comments to flirt. After that post received over 30,000 shares, Patel knew there was enough demand for people to find the perfect match to host a convention bringing together the most eligible singles from across the country.
The Mohan Matchmaking Convention was created to help combat the difficulty of actually meeting someone in real life. These days, “dating” is filtering through a seemingly endless sea of dating app matches and messages, only to never form a real-life connection. Add in the fact that many singles in their adult years are busy professionals, and it’s exceedingly difficult for anyone to find romance — much less love — in this day and age.
When South Asian twenty-somethings struggle to find the one, tradition has them outsource the process of finding a partner to their parents and/or a professional matchmaker. The Mohan Matchmaking Convention put that power back into the hands of the individual. Through the convention’s curated and intimate matchmaking events, the carefully-selected singles can meet and mingle with like-minded singles fitting their interests.
The first day of the event started with a cocktail hour in the evening, followed by a brief panel and some curated games, cocktails, and dancing to close out the night. The second day is where most of the magic happened, with rounds of speed dating, breakout rooms, and more games in the afternoon, followed by an elegant cocktail reception at night. Even though the event was only a mere two days long, it provided plenty of opportunities for attendees to
Although this year’s event was the first edition of the Mohan Matchmaking Convention, it boasted an extraordinary demand, with nearly 10,000 applicants vying for the mere 1,000 spots available at the convention. “Although it was heartbreaking to tell thousands of people that we couldn’t accommodate them, we wanted to create the best event possible for the people we could serve,” says Patel.
The 1,000 lucky singles who participated in the convention were hand-selected for their profiles, interests, and compatibility with other participants. In the quest to help people find meaningful matches with other singles that meet their preferences, Patel and his team sorted through these thousands of applicants and carefully curated the individuals they thought would be most likely to find love.
Based on the feedback they have received, the convention was a rousing success. “We are so excited to see so many new relationships form after our convention,” says Patel. “Even if some didn’t make meaningful romantic relations, so many people left meeting amazing other individuals.”
With the massive success of the Mohan Matchmaking Convention and the number of people that had to be turned away, it’s clear that the event has a bright future ahead of it. Patel hopes to continue his mission of creating meaningful connections between like-minded people, so that they can find success in love.
