April 19, 2017 – San Diego County, Chula Vista School District has begun to release school names and plans for the upcoming 11 new schools[1] to be built in the area. With a growing population in the Chula Vista community, the objective of building the new schools is to maintain adequate class sizes in the district while providing its[2] students with more modernized facilities.
Construction is already under way for CVESD newest elementary school named Saburo Muraoka Elementary. The school is to be constructed near Otay Ranch High School located on Chula Vista’s southeastern side. Saburo Muraoka Elementary will be a two-story school building with a projected cost of $47.5 million. The school was designed to incorporate many energy-efficient components while utilizing as much natural light as possible. Collaborative learning rooms will also be built to encourage group work and team building exercises.
Saburo Muraoka Elementary received its name after a vote by Chula Vista Elementary School District trustees who decided between 41 suggestions. The school is named after Saburo Muraoka a Japanese-American native to the Chula Vista area. Muraoka was a farmer who survived Japanese internment camps in Texas during World War II. After the war, Muraoka returned to Chula Vista to raise a family. Although Muraoka passed in 1983, the school will be named in his honor to represent his legacy and the effect he had on the Chula Vista community.
A Dual Language Immersion Program for 1st Grade students with begin being offered by Saburo Muraoka Elementary beginning in the 2017-18 school year. The program will start with one class with hopes to grow in the future. Parents interested in having their child participate in this program are asked to complete an “Interest Survey” on the CVESD website which is due Friday, April 28, 2017. No students will be guaranteed into this program, however, completion of the survey makes sure your student is entered into the selection process.
CVESD plans to have Saburo Muraoka Elementary School fully completed by July of 2017, with plenty of time to get ready for the 2017-18 school year. Registration for all schools in the CVSD area is already under way, as well as details and plans for the other ten schools CVSD intend to build in the Chula Vista community.
