Borrego Springs Unified School District believes reading is one of the most important skills a student can have. For this school year, every student at the elementary school will visit the public library twice for class visits. These visits are focused on becoming responsible library patrons and encourage reading. The public library is encouraging all students to obtain a library card, and they’re doing a special program to target first graders.
These students will receive a library card and two class visits devoted to how to use the library. The library’s long term goal is to help provide all Borrego Springs students with library cards to encourage them to use the resources there. Some of these include a dedicated children’s area, a dedicated teen area and study rooms, a 3D printer, and a free laptop kiosk.
On May 2nd, the public library will also host Dia de Los Ninos, which will include a library visit from the Escondido Children’s Museum and a bilingual book author. Additionally, every middle school student has already visited the library through a class visit, so the focus of their sessions is using the online catalogue to look up books.
In the fall, the public library hopes to incorporate high school student class visits to learn about digital literacy and online resources they can use for test prep and college applications. The library is also working with the school district on the high school Robotics program.
