Key Highlights
South Africa is endowed with abundant natural resources, including gold, silver, diamond, coal, iron ore, and platinum. The country had 9.9 bnt of proved coal reserves at the end of 2016.
In 2016, the country’s coal production increased by 1.7% over 2015, as a result of higher output from Anglo American Plc, one of the largest coal-producing companies in the country.
The majority of the country’s coal originates from Mpumalanga Province. In 2016, 99.3% of the coal was of non-coking type and 98.6% was of bituminous grade. Historically, South Africa’s coal production witnessed an 11.8% growth due to the commencement of nearly 35 operations during the review period (2000–2015).
To meet the domestic demand from the power sector, the country’s coal production is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.9% to reach 291.1 mt in 2021, supported by the commencement of operations including the Ntendeka Colliery, the Zonnebloem Project, and the New Largo Project.
South Africa, was among the world’s seven largest coal consumers, consuming 182 mt of coal in 2016 – 88.1% of which was consumed by the domestic power sector and 11.9% by the other sectors including steel and cement manufacturing.
The consumption over the forecast-period is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.9% to 207.3 mt in 2021, owing to an increase in the country’s coal-based electricity generation capacities in the years ahead.
Coal consumption by the domestic power sector is expected to reach 182.7 mt by 2021, as the South African government intends to attain a 97% electrification rate by 2025 with a combination of on-grid and off-grid electricity generation plants.
Compared to 2015, the country’s coal exports were down by 1.7% during 2016. Coal exports are expected to decline to reach 73.7 mt in 2021, owing to an anticipated fall in exports to India, South Africa’s largest export partner.
Glencore plc, Anglo American plc, Exxaro Resources Ltd, and Sasol Ltd are the major players in the South African coal industry.
