Collaborative Practice San Diego, long known for being a leader in the collaborative divorce field, is expanding the suite of services members now offer.
Collaborative President Elizabeth Brown, CLS-F, said the expansion is being driven by two main reasons.
“First, our members offer these services. As a professional association, we owe it to the members to help promote them and their services,” Ms. Brown said. “Second is public interest. We have people contacting CPSD who want these services. They ask if we can refer them to someone who does these things because they don’t understand our members offer these services.”
Divorce Mediator
A divorce mediator serves as a neutral third party in a divorce. The mediator only helps guide both sides to a mutually agreeable divorce settlement. The mediator will not represent either side and offers information to both people equally. The mediator often takes care of all court paperwork.
The mediator also does not make any decisions for the couple. The couple must do that. The mediator will explain basic legal information.
Limited Scope Consultation and Services
The Collaborative professionals play a limited role in a divorce in these cases. The help can be in the form of coaching, advice, information, explanation, or support during the divorce. The person or the couple using this service do a lot of the work on their own.
“Think of it like a teacher explaining how to do a math problem. Once the teacher explains how to do the math, then the students must do several more math equations on their own,” Ms. Brown said. “You can also think of it as someone giving you a jack and a wrench, but you have to change the tire on your car.”
Limited Scope Consultation and Services
This service is for people already involved in a mediated divorce. Professionals in Collaborative Practice Group can offer support and coaching to the people as they proceed. This is similar to limited scope consultation. The difference is the couple has already started the process.
