Peptide nucleic acid, or alternatively referred to as PNA, is an analogue of oligonucleotide in which sugar-phosphate backbone has been replaced by a polyamide chain. In some cases, PNA could be used as conventional DNA/RNA. Different from DNA, PNAs are neutral in charge. In this reason, they are more stable chemically and resistant to DNases and proteases. Other advantages of PNA include: high sequence specificity, binding activity and lower salt sensitivity.
